Campo Pequeno – The Venue

Campo Pequeno is one of the most exquisite venues in Lisbon city center. Built in 1892 this uniquely beautiful bullfight arena is a landmark of Lisbon and in special occasions can be transformed in a concert hall, such as for the Unforgeatable Fado Night during the Lisbon Convention.

One cannot enter Campo Pequeno and ignore that this is indeed one of the most breathtaking venues Portugal can offer.

Bellow the venue, underground there is a shoping mall with small shops where you can find almost everything as well as a big square for food & beverage that offers to it visitors a place to relax, eat and shop.

Fado – Intangible Cultural Heritage

Fado is a unique Portuguese music style. Fado songs are usually performed by a solo singer (fadista) and accompanied by a classical guitar and a Portuguese guitar. Fado was distinguished as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2011.

Fado is a way for the Portuguese people to express their feelings about various topics with a unique sound worldwide. This is an experience not to be missed!

Carminho – The Fado Singer

“I might not know who you are, but I know who I am.”

And things could be no different, when someone who sings these words is someone who has always perceived Fado to be her destiny, but who was only able to openly admit it after she truly understood who she was.

In 2009, Carminho sang “Fado”. This was her fado, the one she owned since an early age, when she listened to her parents’ records, when she witnessed the gathering of fado singers in her own house and when, still a teenager, she began to sing in the Taverna do Embuçado. This “Fado” was the title of her first album, which was one of the most awaited albums in the new generation of fado singers: for those who had already heard Carminho, her talent was obvious, but they had to wait – until she finished her graduation, until she travelled the world, until she knew who she really was.

Carminho is without any doubt one of the best fado singers ever.

The International Opera Contest is one of the four Host Events available to all registrants in the Lisbon Convention who wish to enroll.

This event will happen in the Teatro Nacional São Carlos, one of the most beautiful theatre rooms in all Lisbon. There you’ll see performances from incredible young lyric singers from all around the world.

Apart from constituting a stimulus for young professionals, the International Rotary Opera Contest also intends to support them in their endeavors to pursue the ever necessary artistic studies that go hand in hand with successful careers as professional singers. This is the reason why this contest will award more than 25.000USD in scholarships. The young opera singers will perform together with the full Portuguese Orquestra.

Our wish is to provide yet another international platform for the promotion of young talented singers in search for their opportunity in the extremely competitive world of opera. We also aim to bring wide audiences closer to this form of artistic expression and to those trying to succeed in it as serious professionals. We hope you will enjoy the music as well as all the singers performing throughout the Competition. For them, our final words of recognition for taking part in the event and our best wishes.

The Marques de Pombal’s Gardens and Palace

Its construction is placed in the second half of century XVIII and is a project of  Carlos Mardel, architect Hungarian that had a prevailed role in the reconstruction of Lisbon, after the 1755 earthquake.

The interior of the palace shows the magnificent decorative sets of the Pombal’s period, in special of plasters and tiles.

On the back of the palace spaces, decorated with statues and busts of marble, small barriers (muretos) of coated tile staircases are developed. In the gardens, crossed for the stream of the Lage, deserve prominence the cascade of the Poets, with excellent busts of Machado Castro and the set of the building of “lagares” of oil and cellar.

The gardens of this palace represents what was the art of the landscape drawing in Portugal and the concept of garden art in the XVIII century in Europe, but remaining themselves faithful to a Portuguese tradition that produces since the XVI century, the Farms of Muff.

3:  Rotarians are welcome in the Marquis de Pombal’s Palace for a guided tour:

Palace – Chapel – Concord Room – Marquis supper room – Gardens of the Palace and Poets Cascade.  Exit for the north door of the Garden in direction to the light truck.

4:  7 pm - Arrival at the “Butter’s Farm” (Cellar Conde de Oeiras of the “Carcavelos Wine”), for a welcome music moment by the Oeiras/Cascais Quartet

5: Visit to the “Butter’s Farm” and the cellar Conde Oeiras, for a drink.

6: 8 pm - A typical Portuguese Supper (food and drink) with  Folklore and Fado. Delivery of an Oeiras souvenir.

7: 10, 30 pm - Farewell and transport to the Rotarian’s Hotels.

Classic and Modern car Tour  from  Porto towards  the Rotary Convention Lisboa  2013.   Max: 60 teams.

The Tour will start on June 19 after check in at the Hotel Porto Palácio where the participants will receive information, badges, as well as itinerary brochures. Later on, around 6 p.m., people will embark on a mini cruise along the Douro river followed by a reception and a dinner at the Porto Wine Caves in V.N. Gaia.

On June 20, Tomar will be the next destination. Participants will stay at the Hotel dos Templários where a night full of entertainment is expected.

On June 21, after crossing the Santarém region, there will be a reception at the Museu do CPPA, in Paço d`Arcos. Accommodation will be at the Hotel Mirage-Cascais.

June 22 will start with a reception sponsored by the Mayor of Cascais´ Municipality, followed by visits to several museums: Museu da Marinha, Museu dos Coches and Belém Tower. Just before dinner, a reception will be held at ACHAFRR´s stand at the House of Friendship, Convention´s place at Parque das Nações. The day will end with a gala dinner at the Hotel Mirage, where participants will be accommodated.

The participant´s departure for the Rotary Convention Lisbon 2013 will be on day 23.

The House of Friendship (the Convention Business Exhibition), will occupy two of the four pavilions of Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL) in its entirety of 20.000 sq. meters.
